Engineering Sustainability
Greengineering (Sustainability) is not just related to installation, but engages all aspects, material and elements of construction to provide maximum benefit to the client. The best solution for the facility may not be the least cost structure. Each project has a personality and each personality demands a unique solution, balancing material use with efficiency in energy use and human capital.

Today, sustainability is a foundational consideration in design and construction, driving the efficient use of resources – natural resources, energy resources, financial resources and human resources. Ruby + Associates embraces this philosophy through the application of Constructability. Constructability has been in our vocabulary for many years; our focus on constructability allows us to continually evaluate design and construction strategies and make improvements to overall project efficiencies.

What does this mean to our clients? LEED experts, shorter construction schedules, less temporary bracing and shoring, and optimized structural design. The example projects demonstrate application of Ruby's Greengineering, which is rooted in our philosophy of designing constructable solutions.

Steel is Green.
Steel has a “greener” production process than concrete and other materials; throughout its entire lifecycle (from material harvesting to deconstruction), steel creates a carbon footprint that is less than one ton of CO2 per ton of steel, which is far favorable to other materials. In fact, the steel industry has been recognized by the U.S. EPA as having the greatest improvement in air quality emissions of any major industrial sector. Furthermore, steel is multi-cycleable, meaning it can be recycled over and over again with no loss of its physical properties. At the end of a building’s life, 98% of all structural steel is recycled back into new steel products without suffering any degradation. Structural steel used in the United States is produced domestically from 93.3% recycled steel scrap — making structural steel the premier green construction material.
