Installation of two new Selective
Catalyst Reduction (SCR) units posed major hurdles at this 900MW power
plant. Making the tie-in of the new SCR units in a limited plant shutdown
period and under severe site constraints required an innovative approach
to the demolition of existing ductwork. The project team needed a way
to lift large, heavy preassembled sections (up to 400,000 pounds and the
size of a two-story house). Ruby+Associates developed an integrated approach
to the demolition operations that maximized use of the existing support
structure, expedited the overall project schedule and minimized disruption
of plant operations. The project was completed within the budget and schedule
established by the owner, entitling the general contractor to the full
amount of the early completion bonus stipulated in the contract.
